The Malaspina Castle of Fosdinovo lives both of its architectural and scenic splendor and its legends. The most famous is about the young Bianca Maria Aloisia, daughter of Jacob (James) Malaspina and Oliva Grimaldi. The beautiful girl was madly in love with a young groom, who she wants marry at all costs. Their parents were opposed to that shameful for the family coat of arms, and threatened the poor girl with incarceration and meals of bread and water in the dungeon of the Castle.
The girl, not frightened by these threats, wanted to pursue her aim of love. Her rebel attitude forced her parents to take a tough decision: the groom was expelled from the country and the girl locked in a convent. However, she didn’t take the vote or give up her romantic dream.
She was then brought back to the castle, locked in the prisons and tortured until she had changed her mind, but this didn’t happened. Therefore, in order to avoid occasions of scandals, she was buried alive in a cell, together with a dog, symbol of faithfulness, and a boar, symbol of rebellion.
